Cooler temperatures are bringing coho into many Southwest Washington rivers, including the Lewis River near Woodland, Washington. Anglers using cookies, beads, and yarn flies can do well when the fish move across the flats. These runs attract a lot of fishermen, and sometimes it’s shoulder-to-shoulder. Many call this “combat fishing.”
Targeting deeper holes with bobbers and eggs, spinners, or twitching jigs can also be effective.
Right now, anglers can keep three hatchery adult salmon, either all hatchery coho or one chinook and two hatchery coho. All wild coho must be released. The coho fishery should continue well into November, with the run peak sometime towards the end of September. Get out there and get in on the action!
