Bear Farm Outdoors pro staff John Sauer and Dan Bancroft hit the Columbia River August 31 for a day of wobbler fishing for chinook salmon. The run is in full swing right now with 17,000 to 20,000 chinook going over the Bonneville dam every day.
Wobbler fishing is a technique pioneered on the Columbia river. When on anchor, anglers back-bound cannonball lead with a wobbler spoon on a sliding or fixed three-way swivel. The weight should hug the bottom so that the spoon “wobbles” back and forth in the current.
Two of the predominant wobbler spoon manufacturers are Alvin and Brad’s. Weight and wobbler sizes depend on the strength of the outgoing tide. We will be posting detailed guide on wobbler fishing later this winter so stay tuned to Bear Farm Outdoors.
The chinook season for 2023 is currently scheduled to shut down on September 14th, but this could happen earlier if recreational fishing quotas are reached. If you are hankering to catch a king on the Columbia, now is the time!
