Fall brings an abundance of foraging opportunities nationwide, from berries to mushrooms and more. Kathy Meade Merritt of Willow, Alaska, recently roamed the forest and came up with this mixed bag of tasty mushrooms. Like many rural Alaskans, Kathy forages for sustenance as much as fun. She dries mushrooms and uses them for cooking through the long Alaskan winter. She is an ardent outdoorswoman and fishes and hunts.
Mushrooms are abundant in forests across the United States, but not all are edible. If you do go in search of tasty morsels, make sure you have a good mushroom ID book or guide so that you do not eat something that can make you sick or worse!
Safety first, and enjoy the outdoors.
